New OR Used Travel Trailer? Which should you buy?

Posted in Tips for Buying Travel Trailer by Tinny on Tuesday, December 12th, 2017

Have you decided to purchase a travel trailer but don’t know where to start?  You probably have a million questions swirling around in your brain because there are so many things to consider.

  • Should you buy a new or used travel trailer?
  • Are you going to finance or pay with cash?
  • What are you willing to spend?
  • Should you get a 5th wheel or tongue pull travel trailer?
  • What brand of travel trailer is the best?
  • What floor plan is best for your needs?

If you are undecided you should start out by weight the pros and the cons of buying used vs. buying new.  Take your time when purchasing your travel trailer.  Do your research and avoid impulse buys.

PROS of Buying a Used Travel Trailer

  • More Bang for Your Buck.  If you decide to purchase a used travel trailer you will be getting more value for your dollar.  This is the way to go if you are on a budget or don’t want to be stuck with making payments for 10 years.  You could get a used 25′ with all the bells and whistles for less money than a NEW 20′ plain jane travel trailer.
  • Do Your Homework.  Visit travel trailer forums and listen what people have to say about particular manufactures and brand of trailers, this could save you a bunch of future headaches.  Keep in mind the majority of travel trailers that are purchased new rarely see any camping action, most are either put in storage or parked at peoples houses.  Its not uncommon to find a used travel trailer in showroom condition, even older travel trailers from the 70’s can be found in great condition.
  • Used travel trailers hold their value!  If you get a good deal on a used travel trailer and decide to sell it next year you have a great chance of getting all your money back.

CONS of Buying a Used Travel Trailer

  • Potential Problems.  Buying a used travel trailer is a bit of a gamble, there could be minor problems or major problems and if you are lucky – no problems with the trailer.  In most cases the warranty will have long expired, so expense will be out of pocket.  Do your homework right so problems won’t be a surprise.

PROS of Buying a New Travel Trailer

  • Nice & Clean.  It’s new, clean and all yours!
  • Warranty.  If there are problems, take the trailer back to your dealer and they’ll have to fix them for free!
  • Maintenance Free.  You don’t have to worry about buying new tires or a new battery for at least a year or so.

CONS of Buying a New Travel Trailer

  • Depreciation.  A new travel trailer depreciates the moment you pull out of the dealers lot.  If you financed the purchase with little or nothing down, you will be “upside down” owing more that the trailer is worth, for years!  If you decided to sell your travel trailer you will most likely owe more than what it’s worth.
  • The Price.  If you budget minded you probably don’t want to be stuck making monthly payments on a travel trailer you’ll only use at the best 8 months out of the year.  Do the math, and figure out how much each camping trip will actually cost you, just factoring the monthly payments.  Ouch!  If your payments are $350 a month x 12 months = $4,200.  $4,200 can buy a great used travel trailer and you won’t be stuck with payments!

Get a Free Travel Trailer Insurance Quote

The good news is travel trailer insurance is easy to get.  You simply have to provide a few pieces of information and you will be given a quote.

Travel trailer insurance may include:  Total loss replacement due to an accident, theft, windstorms, etc, emergency expense coverage, liability insurance, medical benefits, purchase price protection, unlimited towing and roadside assistance, and more.

You will have peace of mind knowing your travel trailer is insured.  Long and short trips will be covered and your trailer will also be covered while it’s stored.

Travel trailer insurance rates are similar to auto policies and often offer good driver discounts and discounts for multiple policies.  Rates can be decreased by raising the deductibles.

Finding Travel Trailer Insurance Online

The best travel trailer insurance rates can often be found online.  Policies differ from state to state and sometimes separate travel trailer insurance isn’t necessary and the trailer can be added to an existing homeowners insurance policy or auto policy.  Contact your insurance agent for more info but before committing to a policy make sure there isn’t a better deal online because chances are that you can get a better rate on travel trailer insurance online.

I’ve learned first hand that auto clubs will NOT tow an RV if it breaks down.  For this you will need specific RV road side assistance like Good Sam.  With Good Sam membership you can save 50% on campsites! Click Here to Join the Good Sam Club
